About the race
Painter is challenging Sen. Tina Smith for the DFL nomination. Smith was appointed when Sen. Al Franken resigned from the Senate earlier this year.
Painter, a former Republican, is running to the left of Smith, notably on single payer healthcare, taking money out of politics and the environment (Smith supports the Polymet land swap deal, Painter does not).
It’s a controversial race, with many dismissing Painter because of his two year role as an ethics lawyer in the last Bush Administration, but many others seeing him as a breath of fresh air that can crossover the Red/Blue divide and attract new voters to the DFL.
Regardless of your opinion of him, its Painter that is taking all of the air out of the room and, for the moment at least, Smith is playing catchup.
Join us for an honest and frank discussion of the issues. Please come with questions and be prepared to listen and discern.
An open democracy means giving every candidate a fair shot to answer questions and make their best case on how they would govern and what makes them best positioned to keep this Senate seat in DFL hands this fall.
